One Breeder’s Adoption Checklist

Most reputable breeders struggle at one time or another with deciding on potential adopters for their bulldog babies. Will the adopter be showing the dog? Does the adopter have children or other pets? Is the adopter aware of possible bulldog health issues? And so forth…

While most reputable breeders struggle when deciding on potential adopters, every reputable breeder should have a screening policy in place for potential adopters. It is the responsibility of every breeder to place their puppies or retired show dogs in a permanent, loving home with a knowledgeable, caring family.

Two members of the Buckeye Bulldog Club’s family, Jeff and Lottie Elliott of Hurricane Bulldogs, have such a checklist and have graciously allowed us to adapt this list, below, for Buckeye’s web site.

Adoption Checklist

Bulldog Standards
[   ] Adopter will use a bulldog veterinarian we recommend, despite the fact it may require some traveling.
[   ] Adopter has done research on bulldogs and understands completely the
health issues/limitations that accompany this breed. The adopter is accepting of these health issues/limitations.
[   ] Adopter has an air conditioned home and realizes that bulldogs cannot tolerate high heat.
[   ] Adopter’s children, if any, understand how animals should be treated.
[   ] Adopter is either a non-smoker or does not smoke inside the home since bulldogs have so many
    breathing problems.
[   ] Adopter’s other animals, if any, are friendly to dogs.
[   ] If Adopter has ever returned any pet to a breeder/shelter/rescue before, what was the reason?
